Childplace and Greater Clark County Schools Collaborative!
Childplace has entered into a collaborative endeavor with Greater Clark County Schools. The program has two aspects: The Clark County Middle/High School alternative to Suspension Program provides a great resource for children suspended from school. Children suspended for non-major issues from one of the schools located in the Greater Clark County School System are required to attend the Alternative to Suspension Program as opposed to the typical suspension protocol of one to five days at home and often unsupervised. The program is staffed by GCCS teachers and supported by Childplace personnel. This program serves to keep suspended kids off the street, where the potential exists to engage in unsupervised, detrimental behavior. In addition, the program allows the student to remain current with his/her academics and receive workshops on a number of topics (e.g. self-esteem, anger management, substance abuse, etc.) provided by Childplace’s clinical staff and master’s level practicum students from the University of Louisville. This collaborative effort has also enhanced the educational opportunities for the students in Childplace’s Residential Treatment Program by GCCS providing an on-campus academic option for students needing an intense level of educational structure (This program is housed in a different location on the 22 acre Childplace Campus).
